Why We Use Buddies

On a lake trip, a Scout wanted to paddle out alone to check a cove. The rule said buddies only. The Scout grumbled but waited. Twenty minutes later, the wind picked up hard, and the canoe started drifting toward the rocks. The buddy grabbed a paddle, and together they pulled back to shore, tired but safe.

A Scout is Obedient. Following rules can feel annoying, especially when you think you know better. But good rules usually exist because someone learned the hard way. Obedience means trusting that the people who made the rules want to keep us safe.

This week, think of a rule that bugs you. Instead of grumbling, find out why it exists. Ask a parent, teacher, or leader. You might find a good reason, and you might decide that rule is worth following after all.
