Why Government Matters

Scouts, you might wonder why Scouting asks you to learn about government: the Constitution, the three branches, how laws are made. It can feel like homework that wandered into our meeting. But there is a good reason it is here.

The Scout Law says a Scout is obedient. Obedient to what? To laws and leaders we understand and respect, and to fair ways of changing rules that are wrong. Government is not just Washington. It is your town council, your school board, citizens serving on juries and volunteering. When you study government, you learn to be the kind of citizen this country needs: someone who understands how things work, speaks up when something is wrong, and serves the community. Baden-Powell said the most worthwhile thing is to try to put happiness into the lives of others. Good citizenship is one of the best ways to do that.

This week, find out who serves on your town council or school board and one issue they are working on. Troop, dismissed.
