While the Socks Spin

Imagine two adults at a laundromat watching socks tumble behind round glass doors. One is reading about backpacking. The other is studying pictures of ballet steps. At first they sit in silence. Then the backpacker asks what makes a difficult jump work. Soon they are talking.

The Scout Law point Friendly asks us to be a friend to all, including people who are different. That does not mean pretending to like everything someone else likes. It means refusing to treat a difference as a reason to stay apart. You can be curious without making someone defend who they are. A kind question gives another person room to share. Being friendly starts before you find something in common.

This week, start a conversation with someone whose interests are different from yours. Ask what they enjoy about one of those interests. Listen without comparing it to your own. Let their answer matter.
