When the Answer Is No

Picture a sidewalk outside a bakery. A customer spots a dog with a bright red bandanna and reaches to pet it. The owner explains that the dog needs space. The customer pulls back, smiles, and gives them room. No grumbling. No demand for an explanation. Just a friendly nod.

The Scout Law point Courteous means being polite to everyone, including someone whose answer is not the one we wanted. Good manners are more than saying please when we ask. They also shape how we respond. We can ask before touching someone’s belongings, joining an activity, or giving a hug. And we can accept an answer without making the other person feel guilty. That makes being together easier.

This week, ask permission once when you might usually assume it. Whatever the answer, respond kindly. Then practice that same courtesy with someone at home, where good manners matter just as much.
