What You Say When They're Gone
Here is a test of loyalty that nobody grades. A friend leaves the room, and the conversation turns to them. Someone makes a joke. Someone else adds a story. You can feel the room waiting to see what you will do. Do you laugh along, or do you say, "Hey, come on, that's my friend"?
The Scout Law says a Scout is Loyal. Real loyalty shows up most when the person can't see it. Anyone can be nice to your face. A loyal friend protects your name when you aren't there to protect it yourself. That is rare, and it matters.
This week, when talk turns against someone who isn't there, change the subject or speak up for them. It might feel awkward for a second. But the people around you will learn something: you are someone they can trust with their name too.
