The Unwritten Glossary

Picture a marina workshop where adults are talking about sail repairs. One visitor keeps looking from the sail to the speakers. Then the instructor stops naming parts and starts pointing to them. The visitor leans forward and asks a question. The conversation opens up.

The Scout Law point Friendly asks us to be a friend to all, including people who are different. Sometimes the barrier isn't dislike. It's a conversation built only for insiders. Our jokes, shorthand, and shared memories can leave someone outside without our noticing. Being friendly means giving people a way in, without making them feel small. Nobody should have to become a copy of us to belong.

This week, notice when a conversation needs a way in. Explain an inside reference without fuss. Then invite someone whose experiences differ from yours to share something you don't know. Be ready to learn.
