The Stubborn Barcode

Imagine an adult at a grocery checkout. One bag of rice will not scan. The clerk tries again. Nothing. A line begins to grow. The customer feels a sharp comment coming, but takes a breath instead. When the clerk apologizes, the customer answers kindly. The barcode is still stubborn. The moment feels easier.

The Scout Law point Courteous means being polite to everyone, especially when things are not going smoothly. Good manners cannot fix a scanner. They can keep a small delay from becoming a bad experience for someone else. Being courteous means remembering that the person in front of you deserves respect, even when you are tired or annoyed. Your frustration can be real without becoming their burden.

This week, notice one moment when waiting makes you impatient. Relax your shoulders, take a breath, and speak kindly to the person helping you. Make that moment easier, not harder.
