The Second Waterproof Case

Imagine helping an adult skipper unload a boat. One waterproof case holds navigation gear. Another holds a battered prayer book. Its corners are soft, and several pages have been repaired. You would not have guessed it needed special care. But you carry that case gently, too.

The Scout Law point Reverent asks us to honor God and respect the beliefs of others. That second part does not require pretending every belief is your own. It requires remembering that something unfamiliar to you may be deeply important to someone else. You can take your own faith seriously without making another person's faith a punch line. Respect begins when curiosity replaces the urge to judge.

This week, ask someone you trust about a belief or practice that matters to them. Listen without preparing a rebuttal. Then choose one way to give your own relationship with God real attention.
