The Purple Yarn

Imagine two adults waiting at a laundromat. One has muddy work boots. The other is knitting with bright purple yarn. The person in boots has never held knitting needles. Still, that loop of yarn looks puzzling. A simple question about how it works turns a long wait into a conversation.

The Scout Law point Friendly asks us to be a friend to all, including people who are different. We do not need matching hobbies, backgrounds, or ways of speaking before we can be kind. We can begin with curiosity instead of a quick judgment. That means asking a sincere question, listening to the answer, and letting someone enjoy something we might not choose ourselves.

This week, talk with someone whose interests are different from yours. Ask what they enjoy about one of those interests, and listen without making a joke about it. Let your curiosity make room for friendship.
