The Importance of Hiking

Scouts, when people think of Scouting, one of the first things that comes to mind is hiking. It is more than exercise. It is a journey that captures the spirit of everything we do, one step at a time, out in the open air.

When you hike, you step out of the noise of the world and into the rhythm of nature. You push yourself to go farther than you thought possible. Every mile teaches perseverance and teamwork. You encourage each other up steep climbs and celebrate together at the top. You also take responsibility to follow the Outdoor Code and leave no trace, so the beauty you enjoyed is there for the next hiker. And hiking teaches our motto, Be Prepared. You plan your route, pack your essentials, and adapt to the unexpected. Those skills serve you on the trail and everywhere else.

This week, take a walk or short hike outdoors with family or friends, and leave the trail cleaner than you found it.
