Phone Down

Picture a dinner table. Four people, four phones, and almost no talking. Now picture someone setting their phone face down and asking, "So how was everyone's day?" At first it is a little awkward. Then someone answers. Then someone laughs. Ten minutes later, the phones are forgotten and the table is loud.

Being Courteous in today's world includes how we use our screens. Giving someone your full attention is one of the most respectful things you can do. When we look up from our phones, we tell people they are more important than whatever is buzzing in our pocket.

This week, put your phone away during one meal every day. Ask a real question and listen to the whole answer. Notice how much more you learn about the people right in front of you.
