Not Everyone Wants a Splash

Imagine rinsing a boat after a hot afternoon. A dog approaches with its owner. You aim a little spray toward its paws, thinking it might enjoy cooling off. The dog backs away. You lower the hose. What seemed like a treat to you felt different to the dog.

The Scout Law point Kind asks us to treat others as we want to be treated, including animals. That does not mean everyone wants what we want. You might love a loud welcome. Someone else might prefer a simple nod. You might want advice. A friend might need you to listen first. Kindness means noticing the response, not just trusting your intention. We all deserve care that takes our needs seriously.

This week, before doing a favor, ask what would actually help. With an animal, watch its response and respect its space. Then adjust your plan. Let the recipient help define the kindness.
