Imagine two adults on a lunch break. One is sketching a roller coaster on scrap paper. The other hates roller coasters. Too high. Too fast. But instead of dismissing the drawing, she asks how the curves work. Soon she is listening while he explains his favorite hobby. Nobody has to ride anything.
The Scout Law point Friendly asks us to be a friend to all, including people who are different. Friendship does not require matching interests, backgrounds, or beliefs. It starts with treating another person's world as worth knowing. You can dislike the ride and still enjoy the person who loves it. A curious question can open a conversation that a quick judgment would close.
This week, talk with someone whose interests differ from yours. Ask what they enjoy about one of those interests. Listen without making a joke or changing the subject. Give their enthusiasm room.
