Labor Day: The Value of Hard Work

Scouts, as we enjoy this Labor Day weekend, think about what the holiday really means. It is not only the end of summer or a day off from school. It is a day to honor the dignity and value of hard work.

In Scouting, we know something about work. Every badge, every rank, every service project takes effort. When you split wood, pitch a tent in the rain, or practice knots until your fingers ache, you are learning what our country celebrates today. The farmers, teachers, nurses, and builders we honor all started by learning skills, just like you. The Scout Law says a Scout is thrifty, which means working to pay your own way and not wasting what you earn. The habits you build here, showing up, finishing what you start, helping when it is hard, are the same ones that built our communities.

This week, as you head back to school, finish one task completely before starting the next, and do it well.
