Keep Hold of the String

Imagine an adult at a park, trying to untangle a kite string. A friend could grab it and finish faster. Instead, the friend sits beside the tangled pile and asks whether another pair of hands would help. Soon, one holds the loops while the other works them loose.

The Scout Law point Kind asks us to treat others as we want to be treated, including animals. Most of us want help that leaves us feeling capable, not small. Kindness starts by noticing what someone needs, rather than deciding for them. With people, we can ask. With animals, we can watch carefully and give them space instead of forcing a friendly touch.

This week, offer someone help, then let their answer guide what you do. If you meet an animal, respect its space, too. Take a breath before stepping in. Make your kindness fit the other one's needs.
