Fitness Quotient

You have all heard of IQ. It stands for intelligence quotient, and it is supposed to measure how bright you are. Experts argue about how accurate those tests are, and most say your score does not change much as you grow up.

Maybe you cannot do much about your IQ. But there is another score that your own effort can raise. I call it your FQ, your Fitness Quotient. In the Scout Oath you promise to keep yourself physically strong. That promise is not a one-time thing. Regular, vigorous exercise and good health habits like sleep, water, and real food can raise your FQ a lot. The fitness tests in our rank requirements and the Personal Fitness merit badge give you a starting score. If yours is average or below, decide to raise it. Then, most important, follow through.

This week, pick one exercise, like pushups or a mile run, test yourself today, and practice daily. Retest at our next meeting.
