Before You Lift It

Imagine visiting a music shop where an adult customer reaches for an unfamiliar instrument. Before lifting it, she asks the owner how to hold it. He shows her where to place her hands. She does not know its music yet. But she can still handle it with care.

The Scout Law point Reverent asks us to bring that kind of care to something far more personal: our relationship with God and the beliefs of others. Reverence means taking your own spiritual life seriously, not just wearing it like a patch. Respect means asking before assuming, listening without preparing a joke, and letting someone explain what matters to them. You can disagree honestly without treating another person's faith as a punch line.

This week, make time for one sincere act of devotion to God. Then ask someone whose beliefs differ from yours what one practice means to them. Listen without turning their answer into a debate.
